Testosterone Deficiency

Take an ADAM self-questionnaire below.

  • Testosterone is a hormone that is pivotal in developing and maintaining male traits, such as facial hair, a deep voice, and muscle mass. It is also present in smaller quantities in females, contributing to their health.

At times, an individual's body may not produce sufficient testosterone, leading to symptoms like fatigue, diminished muscle strength, mood fluctuations, and sexual dysfunction. If these issues persist and testosterone levels are found to be consistently low, testosterone therapy may be considered.

  • Testosterone therapy, especially to achieve normal levels, improves sexual and erectile function, bone mineral density, corrects unexplained anaemia, improves skeletal muscle mass, physical function, renal function, depressed mood, cognitive function, and reduces progression from pre-diabetes to overt type 2 diabetes by 41%.

There is no evidence that testosterone therapy is associated with increased risk of prostate cancer or cardiovascular risk.

Current evidence suggests likely benefit in cardiovascular outcomes, especially in men with chronic kidney disease and atrial fibrillation, and after previous myocardial infarction. Further long term studies are expected to clarify these issues.

Recent studies suggest that testosterone therapy (and additionally metformin) significantly reduces the incidence of prostate and colorectal cancer
